The Designer

Born in 1901 in London, son of a publican, Norman Hartnell's interest in designing clothes began as he was studying architecture in Cambridge.  From here with the help of his father he opened his business at No. 120 Bruton Street with clientele sauch as Gertrude Lawrence and Barbara Cartland. He soon became well know and popular with the movie industry and is known for dressing many stars such as Marlene Dietrich and Vivienne Leigh. It was then that his relationship with the Royal Family began and he today is best known for designing Princess Elizabeth's wedding dress and many creations for the royal family thereafter. It was not until the 1950's that he began designing jewellery recognisable from his use of crystals and pearls and due to its rarity is considered highly collectible today.
