Born in 1932 in the Dominican Republic Oscar de la Renta first drew clothes for newspapers and fashion houses while he studied painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. It was after a dress designed for the U.S. Ambassador to Spain appeared on the cover of Life magazine that he began an apprentice under Cristóbal Balenciaga, whom he considered his mentor. He left Spain in 1961 to work with Antonio del Castillo as a couture assistant at Lanvin Paris. La Renta went on to work for Arden in 1963 for two years and then for Jane Derby an American Fashion house, a label which he took over in 1965. His designs have been worn by many notables from first ladies Jackie Kennedy and Michelle Obama to celebrities Sarah Jessica Parker and Amal Alamuddin Clooney.
