Elsa Schiaparelli was born in Italy in 1890. Influenced by surrealism she was known for her unusual designs unlike her rival coco Chanel. She is considered responsible for making costume jewellery acceptable and fashionable in the 1920’s.
She opened her first fashion house in Paris and was supported by many artist friends such as Jean Cocteau and Salvador Dali and is most famous for her shocking pink collection in 1936. It was in 1940 that she moved to New York and opened her first ready to wear store also selling jewellery, perfume and accessories before returning to Paris in 1945. In the 1950’s she is best known for producing products with abstract animal and floral motifs using unusual stones and colours. Her jewellery from the 40’s and 50’s is popular among collectors today with many of her early pieces unsigned.
